[edit] Plot summary
Drake hears of a radio contest in which the winner receives a guitar signed by the lead singer of his favorite band, Zero Gravity. He invites all of his classmates to a cell phone party, where everyone will call the radio station to try to win. His sister Megan wins, and promises that she will let Drake keep the guitar, and the concert tickets that go with it, as long as Drake promises to do her math homework for a month. He agrees. To win the contest, Drake must answer the question "What is the 8th planet from the sun?" In order to get to the answer, Josh sings a song he learnt in Kindergarten "I saw Mercury, then Venus. I saw the Earth, then Mars. I saw Jupiter, then Saturn. Uranus and Neptune and Pluto" Drake comes to the answer Neptune, it is correct and Drake wins the prize.
Drake gets the guitar and the tickets. Josh, showing the instrument to Megan, accidentally sets it on fire after plugging it in to a faulty amplifier, and must buy Drake a new one with his life savings, which is $1,200. So that Drake doesn't notice the difference, he also tries to get the singer Devon Malone to autograph it. Drake catches Josh in the act of trying to get the signature. Josh breaks Malone's hand, and Drake must play the concert because he is the only person backstage who can play all of the band's songs.
The next day, the manager of Zero Gravity visits Drake to give him his payment - $5,000 - but a lot of that was used for Devon's medical bills, so they ended up with $1,250 - a payment that neither one expected. Drake chooses to give Josh the money in payment for buying the guitar for him, and answering the trivia question. Josh tells Drake that there is $50 too much and Drake responds by saying "ahhhh get yourself a decent haircut". Josh's response to the money: "I'm gettin' me a tanning bed!"
Drake begins to get used to being a temporary rock star when Megan reminds him that he still owes her a month worth of math homework.
[edit] Trivia
- This was the first episode of Drake & Josh to feature a subplot, something rarely seen on children's programming.
- While the guitar is said to be a vintage Fender Stratocaster, it is in fact made by Squier, a second-line subsidiary of Fender Musical Instruments.
- In a later episode, "Driver's License," Josh says that the tanning bed he bought never really worked.
