[edit] Plot Summary

A surprise visit from Dorothy's daughter Kate puts all of the girls in a good mood-but Dorothy is even more thrilled when she discovers that Kate is engaged to a handsome doctor named Dennis (he is actually a podiatrist, but Dorothy just prefers "M.D."). The happy young couple plans to jet to Jamaica to get married, but Dorothy insists on a wedding in Miami. Kate is willing to agree with the plan...on one condition. Stan, her father and Dorothy's ex-husband, must come. Dorothy despises Stan, as he jilted her for a young blonde stewardess named Chrissy during a mid-life crisis. When asked how the relationship started, Dorothy explained that Stan was on a flight to Hawaii, and that all stewardesses were instructed to give passengers a lei. Chrissy misinterpreted her instructions, and the rest is history. Dorothy, though, is not even that mad at Stan for cheating; she is more upset with having the news broken to her over the phone by a lawyer. But to keep her daughter happy, she agrees to invite Stan. She promises to be on her best behavior, but when Stan appears at the door wearing a hideous toupee the next day, old feelings of hatred soon reappear. She swears that she won't be happy until she's tasted Stan's blood, leaving an anxious Rose and Blanche to keep their eyes on her during the wedding and reception at the house. Dorothy gets through the whole service without doing anything, but at the reception, she finds her vow more difficult to keep, leaving Rose and Blanche to suffer-literally! Dorothy vanishes into her room, and Sophia offers some advice-"anger is like a piece of Shredded Wheat under your dentures." She says that Dorothy must get rid of her anger or it will continue to pain her. Dorothy cheers up for the remainder of the party, but after the festivities, she brings Stan onto the lanai and gives him a piece of her mind. She is hurt that Stan allowed thirty-eight years be wasted in one night, and that he did not have the decency to tell her face to face. Stan apologizes, knowing that it means nothing now, and Dorothy makes him leave, feeling better than ever. As her mother and friends gather around her, Dorothy comments that "I'll always have some of Stan with me." The girls think she means happy memories...but Dorothy is referring to the ugly toupee Stan left behind!

[edit] Memorable Quotes

  • Blanche: And then one day, Stanley is gonna be out of your life completely.
Dorothy: Not completely. There will always be a little part of him that stays with me.
Rose: Of course, Dorothy. After 38 years, there are always bound to be some memories that stay with you.
Dorothy: I wasn't talking about memories. I was talking about this. (holding up Stan's toupee that he left behind)

  • Sophia: Dorothy, anger is a lot like shredded wheat caught underneath your dentures. If you leave it there, you get a blister, and you've gotta eat Jell-O all week. If you get rid of it, the sore heals, and you feel better.
Dorothy: (pauses) Anger is like a piece of shredded wheat?
Sophia: Hey, if you want good lyrics, you listen to Neil Diamond. If you want good advice, you listen to your mother.
