As of 2001 India census^GRIndia, Gubbi had a population of 16,802. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Gubbi has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 71%. In Gubbi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Gubbi is the birth place of Veeranna the great Kannada artiste and he is famously known as Gubbi Veeranna. He released the first ever Kannada talki movie and Dr. Rajkumar was working as a child artist in his theater. Later Dr. Rajkumar became the biggest icon in Karanataka.
