Guanfacine (brand name Tenex) is a centrally acting antihypertensive agent. Guanfacine lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure by activating the central nervous system α-2 adrenergic receptors, which results in reduced sympathetic outflow leading to reduced vascular tone. Its adverse reactions include dry mouth, sedation, and constipation.

[edit] Uses

Guanfacine can be used to control high blood pressure. It works by reducing heart rate and relaxing blood vessels.

It is also sometimes prescribed as an off-label treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. In August 2006, the makers of Guanfacine applied to the FDA to use this drug to treat ADHD
