Guaiacol, or 2-methoxyphenol, is a natural organic compound with the molecular formula C7H8O2. It is the monomethyl ether of catechol.
It is a yellowish aromatic oil derived from guaiacum or wood creosote. Darkens on exposure to air and light. It is used medicinally as an expectorant, antiseptic, and local anesthetic.
Guaiacol is also used in the preparation of synthetic vanillin.
Guaiacol is present in wood smoke, as a product of pyrolysis of lignin.
