Grupppenkommandeur is a Luftwaffe position (not a rank) that is the equivalent of a Royal Air Force Wing Commander or USAF Group Commander. A Gruppenkommandeur is usually of Hauptmann or Major rank. A Gruppenkommandeur commands a Gruppe, which is a sub-division of a Geschwader. A Gruppe will usually contain a number of Staffeln (Squadrons), commanded by a Staffelkapitän.
