Grupetto

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the Italian "small group". The word is used in all languages for the group of riders that forms at the back of mountain stages in cycling road races. The aim for the riders in the grupetto is to arrive within the time limit for that stage and thus avoid disqualification. However, it has been known for a large grupetto to arrive outside the time limit, but in sufficient numbers to force the organisers to qualify the riders to start the next day.
