The town of Gruene, Texas (pronouced like the color "green", IPA: [gɹin]) was founded in 1872 by German farmer Heinrich (Henry) D. Gruene[1], and now lies within the city limits of New Braunfels, Texas in the Texas Hill Country. Once a significant cotton-producing community along the Guadalupe River, it now is animated primarily by tourism. Among the highlights is historic Gruene Hall, built in the 1880s, which bills itself as the oldest dance hall in Texas. The Gruene family home, a Victorian-style built in 1872, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and today operates as the Gruene Mansion Inn. A historic water tower rises above the dance hall, and other buildings at the heart of the district have been renovated into shops and restaurants. There is also a wine-tasting room.
