Grosmont, North Yorkshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grosmont (pronounced "grow-mont") is a small village situated in North Yorkshire, England and is within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The village is named after the abbey which used to be there, which was an abbey from a French monastic order. The village had an industrial background, and former lime kilns and iron working remains are still visible. Reaching or leaving Grosmont by car involves an exceptionally steep hill on the road which goes up to the A169.

Grosmont railway station at the heart of the village forms an intersection between the National Rail Esk Valley Line and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a volunteer-run steam heritage railway which links Grosmont in the north, and Pickering in the south.
Grosmont is also home to the NYMR's Engine shed, where they maintain & restore the locomotives, and can be found on the opposite side of the Railway Tunnel to the Station.
