Grob G 109B
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grob G 109B was developed out of the Grob G 109 by Grob Aerospace of Mindelheim Mattsies of Germany.
The basic concept was that of a two seater self launching motorglider with a 57 foot wing span. The basic airframe construction was in fibreglass. Total weight was around 1870 lbs with a load of 506 lbs. Cruising speed was in the region of 100 knots on the 90 horsepower engine. Though Grob made the engine, it was based on a Volkswagen car engine. The engine could be turned off in flight and propeller could be feathered. The aircraft then became a pure glider, with a best glide ratio of around 1:28. The pilot and passengers sat side by side and enjoyed excellent views from the large perspex cockpit.
This aircraft is now primarily used in Volunteer Gliding Squadrons and to train CCF and Air Cadets through the Gliding Induction and Gliding Scholarship courses, and has absolutely no military applications.
