Talk:Grip, Norway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the article:

Grip municipality was founded in 1897, but the fishing village remained a feudal society.

Is feudal the correct word? I believe there was a høvedsmann but I have not heard there were any nessekonger actually living there. The king sold privileges to businessmenn (væreiere) but those differ from privileges held by feudal lords.

Well, I didn't put much thought into that. An article I read called it a føydalt samfunn, but it might wery well be wrong. But the merchants owned not only trading privileges, but also all real estate on the island (not the church). And no, the merchants lived elsewhere.
