For now, a quick enumerative list. TODO: explanation of the rationale for each item, with more step-by-step instructions.

  1. Use Snes9X 1.42. Use F12 to get a PNG screencap in the native resolution of 256x224.
  2. Use hq2x to scale up the image in a high-quality fashion. (Use ImageMagick's convert to turn it into a TGA for hq2x, and then back to a PNG.) If a closeup is desired, hq3x or hq4x may be more useful.
  3. Crop if necessary.
  4. Compress with optipng.
