Talk:Green-cheeked Conure
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
we have been given 2 green cheeked conures. We believe they are three yrs old... and possible neglected by the owner. If i could get any information on how to get them to accept me. I know it will take patience, but maybe there's something i could be doing to help the situation. Please help!
IT CAN BE A SLOW PROCESS, HOWEVER IN TIME THEY WILL ACCPET YOU. WE LEARNED THAT IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CONURE THEY BECOME MORE CAGE BRIDS. IF YOU HAVE ONLY ONE THEN THEY NEED MORE HUMAN INTERACTIONS. HOWEVER, AT THIS POINT I WOULD NOT SEPERATE THE TWO BECAUSE OF THEIR BACKGROUNDS. TRAINING BIRDS IS THE OPPISITE TECHNIQUE THEN TRAINING DOGS. DOGS REPOND TO YOUR LOUD VOICE AND REALIZE THEY DO NOT LIKE THAT VOICE. A BIRD IS DIFFERENT. IF YOU YELL AND MAKE LOUD NOISES EVERYTIME IT DOES SOMETIHING GOOD OR BAD, IT THINKS "HEY I GOT A RESPONSE OUT OF THAT. I AM GOING TO DO THAT AGAIN". AND THE BIRD WILL. IF THERE IS NO RESPONSE, THEN THE ACTION WILL BE LESS. IT WORKS. OUR BABY CONURE, OSCAR USED TO TRY TO BITE US. WE SAID "NO" WITH FIRMNESS, BUT IT CONTINUED. THEN WE JUST HELD OUR BREATH AND SAID NOTHING AND HE STOPPED. IT WILL ALSO TAKE TIME TO LEARN WHAT THE BIRD DISLIKES. OSCAR HANGS OUT AT THE COMPUTER WITH US, BUT HATED MY HUSBANDS READING GLASSES. ONE DAY AS MY HUSBAND WAS WEARING THEM THE BIRD CAME DOWN AND ATTACKED HIM. OUCH. THE TWO OF THEM DO NOT GET ALONG VERY WELL. WE HAD TO REMOVE THE GLASSES FROM THE HOUSE AND GET A NEW PAIR AND PUT THEM IN A CASE. MY HUSBAND IS FINALLY STARTING TO LEARN TO RESPOND QUIETLY INSTEAD OF YELLING. OH AND MAKE SURE YOU KEEP AN ESTABLISHED ROUTINE WITH THEM. IF THEY LIKE TO SLEEP LATE, LET THEM OR THEY WILL BE CRANKY. OSCAR LOVES TO WATCH ME COOK AND SAMPLE THE FOOD. I GIVE HIM HIS OWN SPECIAL DISH THAT HE CAN EAT OUT OF AND THEN AT MEAL TIME HE GOES IN HIS CAGE. WE HAD BEEN TOLD TO PUT THEM IN A WELL TRAVELD AREA OF THE HOUSE. HOWEVER, THAT IS WHEN THEY CAN BECOME TOO NOISY. OSCAR IS IN MY SONS ROOM. HE CAN SLEEP AND GET LOTS OF REST WHEN WE ARE ALL GONE, AND GETS LOTS OF ATTENTION WHEN SCHOOL IS OVER FOR THE DAY.WE ESTABLISHED A ROUTINE.CONURES LIKE BATHS ONCE IN A WHILE. WE GIVE OSCAR A SLIGHTLY WARM BIG BOWL OF WATER IN THE KITCHEN SINK AND WATCH HIM BATHE. IT IS REALLY FUNNY AND MESSY (NOT AS MESSY AS DOGS!). I HOPE SOME OF THIS IS HELPFUL. JUST GIVE THEM LOTS OF ATTENTION AND QUIET TALKING. THEY WILL LISTEN TO ANYTHING YOU SAY.
The above dialog isn't really appropriate here, it seems to me. Hiznik 22:40, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
