Greg began his musical career in Foster City, CA as a member of the seminal local band, "P.R.I." (1977-1983), named after the erstwhile Saturday Night Live Skit. At the time, Greg was a manager of Wherehouse Music in Fashion Island Mall in San Mateo (now torn down). Playing a mix of AC/DC covers and originals such as "Blow up the Mountain", (on very rare demo tape) P.R.I. made a name for itself and Greg in particular for his mid-show "Bare Ass" maneuvers. One of these stunts, recorded on Super 8mm film at Bowditch Jr. High School talent show resulted in his suspension. P.R.I. staff, included, in addition to Greg Steele, bassist Pete Sweeney, Dave Raphael on vocals, younger brother Steve Raphael on drums. Dave Raphael was an avid fisherman, and would often go fishing with his friend and guitar roadie, Frank Hohl. Sweeney left the band as a result of his finger being severed as a result of a cooking accident. Steve Raphael had a side band as lead vocalist called "Dangerous Toys", which also sometimes featured Pete Sweeney. As for Pete Sweeney, His trademark was to wear classy suits and tuxedos, while the rest of the band opted for spandex and big hair. At a famous concert at Prima Pizza Parlor in San Bruno, CA, PRI was joined on guitar by their roadie, Frank Hohl, who blew away the whole band with his amazing lighting fast Gary Holdsworth / Van Halen-ish riffs. PRI broke up soon thereafter, and Steele moved down to L.A. soon thereafter.
