Greg Curnoe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greg Curnoe (19361992) was a Canadian painter known for his nationalism and for his concentration on subjects associated with London, Ontario.

He became known for work similar to the pop art genre, which continued to parallel his later work.

He was a founding member of the Nihilist Spasm Band, a group which arguably pioneered the concept of noise music.[citation needed] Curnoe was a member of another group called the Nihilist Party of Canada, urging many Canadians to destroy their ballots. In London, he founded Region magazine in 1961, Region gallery in 1962, and The Forest City Gallery in 1973. He also helped found CARFAC with Jack Chambers in 1968.

He was an avid cyclist, and bicycles were a favourite subject of his work. Tragically, while on a club ride, a distracted driver of a pickup truck failed to see the group of riders and plowed into them. Curnoe was killed and several others were seriously injured.
