Greenlawn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 13,286 at the 2000 census.

Greenlawn is located at 40°51′28″N, 73°21′57″W (40.857648, -73.365932)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place (CDP) has a total area of 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 13,286 people, 4,499 households, and 3,347 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,397.8/km² (3,620.0/mi²). There were 4,644 housing units at an average density of 488.6/km² (1,265.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 77.29% White, 15.26% African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.80% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.36% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.81% of the population.

There were 4,499 households out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.38.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $64,201, and the median income for a family was $76,917. Males had a median income of $48,812 versus $33,727 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,179. About 2.3% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 6.6% of those age 65 or over.

  • The pop singer Mariah Carey grew up in Greenlawn. She attended Harborfields High School, which is also located in Greenlawn.
  • The independent film Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was filmed here in late 2005 and early 2006.
  • The independent film L.I.E. had shots filmed in Harborfields High School.
  • Greenlawn is also the current home of the Harborfields Brewers. The Brewers are a Long Island Stan Musial baseball organization, who play their home games at Harborfields High School. The Brewers are heading into their second season. The Brewers were 13-11-1 in their expansion season, and earned a playoff berth[citation needed].
  • XM/FreeFM talk show host Gregg "Opie" Hughes attended Harborfields High School and graduated in 1983.
