Great Coastal Hurricane of 1806 occurred on the Atlantic Coast of the United States from August 21 to August 23, 1806. One of the more violent hurricanes of era, it was also slow-moving, with considerable rainfall. It first came ashore in South Carolina, and moved slowly north through North Carolina and Virginia.

Due to its slow movement and consequent erosion of the coastline in the Hampton Roads area of southeastern Virginia near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, the creation of Willoughby Spit in Norfolk County, Virginia was completed. [1] The hurricane killed 21 off of Barnegat Inlet in New Jersey.
