This is a 1934 photo from the Caltrans site, looking north at Grapevine. This stretch of the original Ridge Route was bypassed by the Ridge Alternate in 1936.

[edit] Fair use for Ridge Route

Though this image may be subject to copyright, I (NE2) feel its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  1. It is a photo that the California Department of Transportation has provided for free on their website.
  2. The photo is being used to show the winding nature of the old Ridge Route in an area that has been destroyed; the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 cut right through the middle of this photo. It also shows the abrupt difference between the curvy Ridge Route and the 17-mile tangent straight across the San Joaquin Valley.
