"Gravity" (2007) |
"Gravity" is the second single released from John Mayer's 2006 studio album, Continuum.
Mayer had released the song prior to Continuum's release with his band John Mayer Trio's debut live album Try!. Along with the song "Vultures", "Gravity" is one of only two songs from Try! that was carried over onto Continuum. The song does not, however, appear on Mayer's follow-up to Continuum, The Village Sessions (which catalogues certain demo recordings from the lead up to Continuum's release).
Mayer suggested in an interview with the magazine Performing Songwriter that "Gravity" was the song he was always trying to write, using the examples of "City Love" (from Room for Squares) and "Come Back to Bed" (from Heavier Things) as being early attempts at "writing Gravity".
The song was featured in an episode of House that aired on September 12th, the day of Continuum's US release.
Mayer performed "Gravity" at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007 along with Corinne Bailey Rae and John Legend as the end of a medley of songs by the three, beginning with Rae's "Like a Star", which was followed by Legend's "Coming Home" (from album Once Again). The trio was introduced by Stevie Wonder and each performed through the whole medley in some way. Both Rae and Legend performed backing vocals and Legend played piano for "Gravity". Mayer performed various backing guitar licks for "Like a Star" for Rae, though played little throughout Legend's "Coming Home".
