Grand Encampment, Wyoming

Encampment is a town in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 443 at the 2000 census. Formerly known as "Grand Encampment" this town along the Colorado-Wyoming border was, at the turn of the twentieth century, a booming center of copper mining and smelting. At one point a sixteen mile long tramway was built to carry copper ore from the mountains into the town for smelting. This steam powered tramway was, at the time, the longest in the world. Since mining ceased in the early twentieth century, the town's fortunes have steadily declined, culminating most recently in the closure of a lumber mill, the town's largest employer.

Grand Encampment is located at 41°12′30″N, 106°47′28″W (41.208216, -106.791215)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 443 people, 209 households, and 137 families residing in the town. The population density was 106.9/km² (277.1/mi²). There were 336 housing units at an average density of 81.1/km² (210.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.52% White, 0.45% Native American, 0.68% Asian, and 1.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.68% of the population.

There were 209 households out of which 23.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% were married couples living together, 2.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.64.

In the town the population was spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 36.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 115.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $29,444, and the median income for a family was $37,083. Males had a median income of $36,786 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,632. About 9.1% of families and 12.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.6% of those under age 18 and 12.0% of those age 65 or over.
