[edit] Carlton Football Club presidency
In 2006 Smorgon took over the presidency of the Carlton Football Club and joins his cousin David (who is president of the Western Bulldogs) in holding the presidency of an Australian Football League club.
During his brief nine-month stay with the club, he was voted out of the presidency on February 2, 2007 amidst claims of election fixing, board disputes and a turmoil ridden period for the club. During the heated election campaign, Smorgon attacked potential challenger Tom Elliot, stating that he would be unlikely to be successful due to his surname. While Tom Elliot, as the son of former president John Elliot, certainly carried some baggage from his father's reign as President, many questioned the tactics employed by Smorgon against him. Ironically, Smorgon could possibly go down in history as Carlton's worst president, saving John Elliot from the title. [1]
