Grüner Veltliner

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grüner Veltliner, also known as (Green) Veltliner, is a grape variety widely grown in Austria. It is a white wine grape used to create the famous fresh, fruity young wines of the same name. Veltliner wines persuade with an intensive nose and freshness with hints of white pepper or tobacco on top of the typical citrus and fruit (peach) notes.

Ripening around mid-late October, it is commonly consumed very young yet has very good aging potential (up to 15 years) when made from the finest vintage-year grapes.

In several recent blind tastings, the finest examples have been rated higher than chardonnays from around the world.

It is also grown in Hungary, but has not been taken up in significant quantities elsewhere, perhaps because it is only recently that high quality wines have been made from it and been noticed outside Austria.
