The GPE Palmtop Environment or simply GPE aims to provide a Free Software GUI environment for palmtop and handheld computers running the GNU/Linux operating system. GPE uses the X Window System, the GTK+ widget toolkit, and the Matchbox window manager. The HP Jornada 72x, the Compaq iPAQ and Sharp Zaurus are among the currently supported devices. Support for the Treo 650 [1] and other devices [2] is under development .
GPE is not a single piece of software, but a complete environment of components which makes it possible to use a GNU/Linux handheld for tasks such as Personal Information Management (PIM). GPE also provides the infrastructure needed by developers; besides providing core software such as shared libraries, the GPE environment fixes standards for program interaction such as SQL, XML and other data schemas. One of the major goals is to encourage people to work on free software for mobile devices and to experiment with new technologies.
