[edit] Adoption

Would you like to be adopted? Let me know which areas interest you here on WP and I might be able to help! A message on my Talk page is the best way to contact me. I am on UK time (GMT+0), if that is an issue. (aeropagitica) 06:18, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi aeropagitica! I'd love to be adopted. I am pretty new here. See my User page for. . .several. . .userboxes re: my interests. I think I'll mainly work on fixing grammar and messy pages, and maybe Wikifying if I can get a feel for the correct tone of Wiki articles. (I have an editor's eye.) I am pretty confident, but I think I may need to Be More Bold. Goyston 16:42, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Fine! Being bold is a good idea - don't be afraid to make mistakes! They can always be reverted or corrected. You can ask me about anything to do with Wikipedia and I will do my best to answer - either from experience or using research. There's a lot to do on this project and I have only scratched the surface in two years. I'll look forward to hearing from you! Regards, (aeropagitica) 16:52, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: A couple of formatting questions

Hi, (aeropagitica)! Thanks for adopting me and all; it's nice to have someone to ask questions personally as opposed to the help desk. I just had a few quick formatting questions. First of all, when you are creating a Level 1 headline with ==This== is there a policy regarding whether you put == Spaces around it == or ==Keep it tight== ? Does it matter? There is a lot of inconsistency, and I guess it doesn't as both look identical, except when editing the page. Any benefits to either? Also, I've noticed a lot of people put a blank line between headers and the beginning of their text. Does this matter either? Or is this all just personal preference. This is pretty trivial stuff, I know, but if there is a "right way" I'd like to use it. A couple of other things: when editing a talk page, or a user talk page, when is it appropriate (if ever) to mark as a minor edit? Is a quick note minor, or are all talk page edits minor, or none? Finally: there seems to be a whole standard shorthand for edit summaries. I have read the official page on this matter but it doesn't help much. "rv" is reverted, but I haven't figured much else out. And what do you write for an edit summary to a talk page? Anything? Thanks so much, (aeropagitica), and sorry if my questions seem trivial! I just want to know what the right thing to do is. (aeropagitica) 15:11, 6 January 2007 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Goyston (talkcontribs) 08:15, 6 January 2007 (UTC).

Firstly, your questions aren't trivial - to you! - so that's why I'm here to help you answer them. To answer your questions point-by-point:
  1. There is no difference in the output when you put the spaces between the equals signs and the title characters or have them tight against each other. I prefer to leave a space, personally, as then it is easier to cut-and-paste, if required. The Manual of Style doesn't include spaces, but there's no need to remove them from article headers if you find them when editing.
  2. The MediaWiki software interprets the Wiki code for display of text on the screen, so the spaces are automagically inserted when the browser downloads the article. Personally, I prefer to leave a space between a heading and the start of a paragraph as it is then easier to read the Wiki code screen if other people have to edit the same article. Compacting text to remove white space makes a page harder to read and edit. I would say leave a space but it doesn't make any difference to the article when downloaded in your browser. It's just whether you want to make the page easier to read for editors that will come after you.
  3. I mark all of my edits as minor unless they are substantial additions to articles or policy discussions. I think that a major edit is adding a paragraph of text to an article, substantially rewriting an article to improve it by adding sources, references and removing POV material, etc. Comments on Talk pages are neither here-nor-there. Other people may have their own views, so it's up to them. You can set your edits as minor by default in your preferences on the top right-hand side of the Wikipedia page, amongst other things.
  4. Edit summaries are edit summaries - a synopsis of the points contributed to the page or article. If I click the '+' sign next to the edit tab on a user Talk page then the option for leaving an edit summary isn't present. If you choose to edit the entire page then it does require an edit summary. 'rv' does stand for revert and I see this when people have rolled back vandalism using software designed for that purpose, such as VandalProof or AutoWikiBrowser. A list of edit summary abbreviations can be found at Wikipedia:Edit summary legend.
Don't feel afraid to ask any more questions, that's part of what adoption is all about. Regards, (aeropagitica) 15:11, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanx (again)

Thanx 4 fixin' that mistake in my userpage, I'm a wiki newb so I'll appreciate all kind of help anyone could give me. Thank U again! KatKiller 06:26, 11 February 2007 (UTC) I'm already adopted by user SGGH, but I will thank any kind of help you could give me, so you can unoficially adopt me, ok? KatKiller 19:45, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
My first question: I have a red link in my userpage: " Wikipedians with 2 siblings", what can I do to erase it?... my mothertongue is Spanish, and I can contribute w/ a pro level of English because my sister is studyng "English Language and Literature" at the university and she can help me to improve my articles but I can only comunicate w/ a moderate level of English, anyways I can understand everything you told in a perfect way. I want to write my first article about cuban life and culture (any topic related) and I'm also very interested in writing about numismatics because I'm a numismatician since I was 12 and I know a few things about that... excuse my English, please...thank u again KatKiller 20:01, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Response to help request

I watch Category:Wikipedians requesting help improving their user pages, and saw you appear there. Your user page looks like a really good start to me. I think it is unusual but not necessarily a bad idea to disclose what you feel may be biases. I don't think I've seen anyone else here do that, and we are all supposed to assume good faith, so it may not really be necessary. The main improvement I can think of would be to put the Babelbox in its default location (and only put language-related userboxes in it), and then either remove or move to a /Personal sub page the "just for kicks" userboxes, and retain on the your user page the userboxes that genuinely tell other Wikipedians something Wikipedia-relevant about you. For instance, ancestry, politics, Python, facebook, search engine, OS & browser preferences, etc. are not particular informative from a WP perspective, though someone more deeply interested in what makes you tick might find them of interest on a /Personal page. What is or isn't really WP-relevant is a judgement call. Your location probably is, as is your interest in broad categories such as theatre, since this may guide people one what to seek your input about, what WikiProjects to invite you to, etc. Please see my user page for an example of how to break up a huge "blob" of userboxes, and arrange them so that they enhance the text they appear with. I don't say mine is some "model" for how to do it, just an example. I put stats up at the top, then ones that relate to my activities and editing, with a some text talking about that stuff too, then Wikiphilosophical ones down in that section, where I have nascent essays on Notability and so forth. Hope this helps and gives you some ideas.  :-) PS: If you want to do something more whiz-bang and different, I'd advise looking at a lot of admins' pages. Many of them have figured out some very nice styling with wikitables and such. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 18:56, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] You were right!

Ok, I hadn't checked my edit count in many months, but I really thought I would have had about 2000 mainspace edits. I guess it's from my laziness in not always signing on when I edit. Anyway, my comment to you made me want to check and it turned out that you were absolutely correct. May I offer my second apology for the day? Unschool 22:00, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] My user page (Reply)

Okay high five, Sd. Thanks so much for totally renovating my user page! I just logged in and *poof* my user page is fantastic. I know you didn't design it, but I am totally terrible with this sort of thing. Great work. (If you didn't notice, check your barnstars on your user page. There's a new one. =)) Goyston talk, contribs, play 03:47, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photo offering

Hey Goyston1 Thanks for your offering. I dont come here to wikipedia that much anymore. One thing that discouraged me is the lack of interest in unity by some of the Hispanic hermanos y hermanas.

You really cannot leave Puerto Rico before visiting the island-town of Vieques or Caguas. Maybe you could take a photo of Caguas Tower or Bonneville Apartments, the four building public housing complex next to the Tower. I used to live there! hehe! :)

Well I hope you have a good time on your travels! Thanks and God bless you!
