The Government of India operates within a framework of federal parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of India is the head of government. It was established by the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950, and is the governing authority of a federal union of 28 states, 6 union territories and 1 National Capital Territory. Collectively, the federal union is called the Republic of India.
The Government of India consists of legislative, executive and judicial branches. The Legislative branch is a bicameral parliament, comprising the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) and the Lok Sabha (Lower House). The Executive arm consists of the President, Vice-President, the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. The judiciary branch is independent of the legislative and executive branches. The Supreme court consists of a chief justice and 25 associate justices. The legal system as applicable to the federal and individual state governments is based on the English Common and Statutory Law. India accepts compulsory International Court of Justice jurisdiction with several reservations.
