Governor's Cup (Battle for the Bluegrass)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Governor's Cup (sometimes called the "Battle for the Bluegrass") is the name given to the annual football game between the University of Louisville Cardinals and the University of Kentucky Wildcats. It is so-named because the winner has received the Governor's Cup trophy since the series was renewed in 1994. Kentucky leads the overall series 10-9, but Louisville has won 9 of the 13 since 1994, including 7 of the last 8.

[edit] Game 12:Sept 4, 2005 * Commonwealth Stadium * Louisville 31, Kentucky 24

In the 2005 game, The Cards took a 28-7 lead into the locker room and appeared well on their way to a repeat of the 1999 game, but the Wildcats had other plans. UK stormed back in the second half scoring 17 straight points to cut the deficit to 23-28 and had the normally inflackable Brohm badly out of rhythm. Late in the game it looked like the Cats were going for the tying score, but QB Andre Woodson was stripped line of the ball at the two yard by Louisville Senior Brandon Johnson. U of L running back Michael Bush would then take over, as the Cards held onto the ball for the rest of the game. FINAL: CARDS 31, CATS 24
