The 22nd Dáil was elected on June 11 at the 1981 general election and first met on June 30 when the 17th Government of Ireland was appointed. The 22nd Dáil lasted for 279 days.

The 17th Government of Ireland (June 30, 1981–March 9, 1982) was formed by Fine Gael and the Labour Party.

- ^ James Dooge was appointed as Minister for Foreign Affairs on the 21 October 1981. He could not be appointed to cabinet until he had been appointed to the Seanad Éireann and that could not happen for some months because appointments can only take place after the general election for the Seanad has been held.
