A general university in industrial as well as agricultural hub of Pakistan, i.e. Faisalabad started in 1897 as a Municipal Middle School, in September 1905 it was upgraded to the level of the High School. In May 1924, it attained the status of Intermediate College and in October 1933 it was upgraded to Degree Level. Government of the Punjab declared Government College, Faisalabad as an autonomous institution on 1st July 1990. The College was given the status of University on 23rd October 2002. University is been building up by adding few new gigantic buildings recently. Yousaf Block is one of them where all the professional studies are held currently. GCUF also trying to extend its area so another campus is concerned near sahiwal.
