[edit] Classification

Should he really be classified as a demon? If my memory serves me right, all of the balrogs, including Gothmog, were originally Maiar corrupted by Melkor. -69.29.163.55

Tolkien frequently referred to the balrogs as 'demons' and translated the term as 'demons of might' ('rog' = 'demon'). Indeed, in letters Tolkien directly stated correspondences for Eru > God, Melkor > Satan, Ainur > angels, and Balrogs > demons. --CBD 17:40, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
