[edit] History
The regiment traces its origins back to 1811 when it was decided to organize the unit Nationalbeväringen på Gotland (later Gotlands nationalbeväring) after having experienced the Russian occupation of the island in 1808-1809. The unit was 6,781 men strong and consisted of three artillery companies and 43 companies of infantry and rangers.
The unit was reformed into Gotlands infanteriregemente and Gotlands artillerikår in 1887 and the infantry regiment gained the designation I 27 (27th Infantry Regiment). It was organized into Gotlands infanterikår between 1928 and 1937, when it got its regimental name back. It was also redesignated I 18 in 1928.
Gotlands infanteriregemente was reorganized into the armoured Gotlands regemente in 1963.
