"Got 'Til It's Gone" is the first single from Janet Jackson's sixth studio album, "The Velvet Rope". The song was released as the international first single for the album. It is rumored to be produced by Hip Hop collective The Ummah (Q-Tip, Jay Dee & Ali Shaheed Muhammad) as noted many times by late producer J Dilla, but this theory is still heavily debated. This song is notable for its use of a sample from Joni Mitchell's song "Big Yellow Taxi", which originally appeared on her 1970 album, Ladies of the Canyon. The song is also sampled in the theme song of the TV series Now and Again.

[edit] Music video
The video was shot by Mark Romanek in Los Angeles. It takes place during the time of Apartheid in South Africa and Janet is a lounge singer. The video is a blend of 60's and 70s African and African American culture as the people feel free and have a good time living life. Supermodel Alek Wek appeared in the video. Even though the song was released as an international single, the video received television airplay in the U.S. The video is still in heavy rotation on digital cable outlets. It also received critical acclaim, winning a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video in 1998.
