Gorilla Repertory Theatre Company
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gorilla Repertory Theatre Company, also known as Gorilla Rep, is an environmental theater company based out of New York City. Best known for its perennial production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, [1] Gorilla Rep brought plays to parks all over New York City from its inception in 1989 through 2002. Although 2002 was the last full season for the original company as a whole, founding artistic director Christopher Carter Sanderson mounted two individual productions in the summer of 2003 under the Gorilla Rep name. [2] In 2007, Sanderson announced the reformation of the company. [3]
Gorilla Rep's repertoire consists primarily of the works of William Shakespeare and other classics, with occasional works by modern playwrights. [4] Before its recent reformation, the productions were typically performed outdoors, in various parks in New York City. From scene to scene, both actors and audience would change location, with the actors running to the next setting and the audience following behind. [5] Each production was site-specific, with local environmental features worked into the staging of the show. [6]
