[edit] Founding
Gordon College was founded in 1852, and originally served as a seminary.
In 1872, Gordon College was named after Georgia native General John B. Gordon. General Gordon served as a Confederate corps commander in the American Civil War, and after the war served three terms in the U.S. Senate and two terms as Georgia's Governor. During this time Gordon College was Gordon Military College. Gordon College was admitted as a member of the University System of Georgia in 1972, as an associate-level college.
Through the mid-1980s, Gordon's teams were known as the "Generals," a nod to General Gordon. Due to concern about Confederate symbolism though, the teams are know called the Highlanders. There has also been a general trend to tie the Gordon name to Scottish heritage in recent years.
