The Southern Necropolis in Glasgow`s Gorbals, was opened in the year 1840 to provide an affordable and respectable place of burial for the people of Gorbals and surrounding areas of the city of Glasgow. The entrance to the cemetery is at Caledonia Road, Gorbals, via the grand gatehouse (built in 1848) designed by architect Charles Wilson. There are three sections to the cemetery, Central opened in 1840, Eastern opened in 1846 and the larger Western section opened in 1850. There are over 250,000 burials within the many lairs and each one represents a piece in a unique historical jig-saw. Within the many lairs there are individuals who are characters in their own right and have contributed to the rich legacy of our fair city, Alexander Greek Thomson, Sir Thomas Lipton, Wee Willie White, Charles Wilson, John Robertson, Agnes Harkness to name but a few.
