Gopalganj is an administrative district in the state of Bihar in India. The district headquarters are located in the town of Gopalganj, and the district is a part of Saran Division. The district occupies an area of 2033 kmĀ² and has a population of 2,149,343 (as of 2001).

Gopalganj is an important agricultural center in North Bihar. Being an important district in the region, it has several secondary and tertiary industries based on agriculture, such as cold-storages, the running sugar mills (4 in number) in the region. Not only thae since it is intersected by NH28 the national highway between delhi and kolkata, it has a huge potential to develop as a business centre. Besides business centre in material goods, it is a huge centre of agri business and dairy products in the region.

Thawe is a very holy place in Gopalganj District specially for Goddess Durga. Any one can see the huge rush at Thawe Temple on Monday and Friday. Thawe comes under 24 "ShaktiPith" of Ma Durga located all over India.

Gopalganj is an agricultural area and Paddy, Wheat, Sugarcan, Maize are specially grown here. There are four sugar mills in Gopalganj 1. Sidhwalia Sugar Mill, 2. Visnu Sugar Mill (Gopalganj), Mirganj Sugar Mill and Sasamusa Sugar mill. The people of this district are very good and having a moral character. In politics Gopalganj District has played an effective role by providing three chief ministers for the state i.e Sh. Laloo Prasad Yadav, Sh. Abdul Gaffur and Smt. Rabri Devi (w/o Sh. Laloo Prasad Yadav) yet. There is also a very famous village called Bhat hathua/hathua baazar which has produced many national figures.Mr.Pappu yadav is from this village only presently doing engineering in SLIET,Longowal,Punjab. There are so many educational institutions situated in Gopalganj but Gopalganj College Gopalganj, D.A.V. High School, V.M. High School are famous among them. Saraswati Niketan was a famous school here but now it has closed down. A great personality named SAHIL SADDAM also comes from this holy district. Right now, he is busy developing software for operating satellites . Minj Stadium is situated in Gopalganj as playground. Near Minj Stadium gate is the house of Yashendra, the film maker based in Mumbai. He has also established a Charitable Trust in Gopalganj for eductaion n social welfare. He also happens to be the grandson of the most eminent literary figure of Gopalganj- Late Yogendra Prasad 'Yogi'( advocate) whose poems were used by the freedom fighters during India's struggle for independence. People for the then Saran distt (which included Gopalganj) went to join Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March singing Yogi's famous poem 'Namak Satyagrah', written specially for the occasion. His poem " Vijay Dhwaja" (*written on 15 August 1947- India's Independence Day) and 'Bapu Ki Rakh'( written on 30 January 1948- Mahatma Gandhi's Martyrdom Day) have moved many. Yogi's poems-collection was published by Rajakamal Prakashan in 1977. Yogendra Prasad Yogi used to have guests, like Dr. Rajendra Prasad ( first President of India), Subhash Chandra Bose and Rahul Sanskrityayan, at his house in Gopalganj.

Kinder Garden School, the most famous one for nursery kids, was established by Late Siya Bihari Sahay ( Yashendra's mama), ex-MLA, who gifted his own land for the purpose.He has been a leading social worker of Gopalganj. This school is now named : Siya Bihari Kinder Garden. Siya Bihari Sahay's statue was recently unveiled by Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar State.

Although it is a small town, Gopalganj has several cinema theaters (5 in number, notably among them the Janta Cinema with a seating capacity of over 800 people), and also small hotels and restaurants. Recently, the trend of internet cafe's has caught up here.
