[edit] Achievements
Gomes is a nationally and state recognized highly achieving school. Its highest achievement was the status of a National Blue Ribbon School in 1987.[4] It is one of the few schools in the highly competitive district to achieve this honor in its history. It is consistently able to keep approximately 90 percent of its students scoring at or above the 50th percentile.[5] Additionally Gomes has always had a historically high level of achievement. In the 2004-2005 school year, they continued to improve their test scores, already in the high 900s. On the API Base and Growth Scale from 200 to 1000, they went from a API Base of 947 score and an API Growth Score of 964 in the 2002-2003 school year to 979 and 982 in 2003-2004, and improved once again in 2004-2005 to 975 and 983.[5]The API growth score for 2005-2006 is an unbelievable 989.[6] These numbers place Gomes tied for 5th in the state according to the API Growth score.[6] Additionally, Gomes had the highest ranking in both API Statewide ranks and API Similar School Rankings for the past three school years (2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005).[5]
[edit] Sports
Not only does Gomes have excellent test scores, but it also has some very determined and athletic students. The girls and boys basketball teams have always done well against other elementary schools. Every season, they play against other FUSD (fremont unified school district)elementary schools In the 2006-2007 school year, the boys basketball team placed first out of four schools, and the girls placed third. These basketball players set aside time for other things, while also achieving good grades. This is exaclty what Gomes is known for.
[edit] Demographics
Gomes Elementary's approximate level of enrollment is 889 students total.[2] Gomes Elementary lacks any significant minority population. This important fact has been noted as a reason for the very high level of achievement at the school. The school has a student population of 85 percent Asians and 11 percent Whites, 2 percent Latinos, while the remaining populations are all at less that one percent.[5] Due to this fact, only the test scores for Asians and Whites are reported for the school since only data is reported for those populations with significant numbers.[5] Additionally, female students slightly outnumber male students.[2]
[edit] Parent Involvement
Gomes Elementary is in one of most tight-knit communities in Fremont, and reports a very high level of parent involvement. Their Back-to-School night and Open House have both reported attendance of about 95%.[5] There are many significant parent organizations on the campus, including the PTA, the School Site Council (SSC), the Emergency Preparedness Committee (GEPT), Traffic Safety Patrol, and FAME and Music for Minors, which assigns docents in classrooms.[5] Parents have very close communication with teachers and administrators.[5]
