[edit] Golondrinas

Sotano de las Golondrinas, means "Pit of the Swallows" in Spanish. It is named for the many indigenous swalls that nest in the walls of the pit. Each night and morning there is a large bird flight, a popular sight among tourists.

Golondrinas is located in San Luis Potosí, Mexico near the town of Aquismon. The entrance drop for descending is approximately 333 meters deep (1092 feet), making it the second deepest entrance drop in the world. Golondrinas is famous among cavers worldwide.

Special care (and about 1,200 feet of 11mm Nylon rope minimum) are required to descend / ascend this pit, and it should only be attempted by those in very good shape and who have vast knowledge of Vertical Caving techniques.

The cave opening allows rain and light to enter the cave, so that small animals such as millipedes, insects, snakes, and scorpions can live at the bottom of the drop.
