Gollum's Song
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Gollum's Song" is the end theme of Peter Jackson's 2002 film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and is the theme for the creature Gollum. The song's music is by Howard Shore, and the lyrics are by Fran Walsh. The version in the film is sung by Emilíana Torrini.
The song is based on Gollum's/Sméagol's feelings: the first part can be interpreted as the voice of Sméagol, who suffers from his alter Ego, the demonic Gollum, a creature brought forth by the ring (and Sauron's nature in it). The second part where the text is almost completely repeated in the 2nd person singular can be seen as the terminatory verdict by Gollum over Sméagol (,who once was a special kind of Hobbit). (you can never go home) Sung in a haunting voice, this song captures the essence of Gollum/Sméagol. It foresees death, a tragic betrayal, and the prophecies of being and dying alone.
The song explains Gollum's story and prophesies the same fate for the hobbits Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee.
