Goliath transmitter

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Goliath transmitter was a VLF transmitter of the German Navy near Kalbe an der Milbe, which was in service from 1943 to 1945. It had a transmission power of 1000 kW and was the most powerful transmitter at those days.

Goliath transmiter used as transmission antenna three umbrella antennas, which were arranged radially around three 210 metre tall guyed steel tube masts, which were insulated against ground. At their edges these antennas were mounted on grounded 170 metre tall guyed attice steel masts. Three of these masts carried two umbrella antnnas, so there were just 15 lattice steel masts.

Goliath transmitter allowed communication to submerged submarines and long-range communication.

Goliath transmitter, which was an idolfor many similar facilities, was dismantled in 1946 and the installations were dismantled. Today, there is only one basement of a former 170 metre mast left.
