Golden State Athletic Conference
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Golden State Athletic Conference is a college athletics conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The conference commissioner is Dr. Cliff Hamlow of Azusa Pacific University. Conference leadership is shared among the member institutions. The conference was formed in Autumn of 1986.
The conference is unique among collegiate athletic conferences as its members are all Christian colleges located in Central and Southern California. They are all similar in enrollment, academics, athletics and student life.
Conference teams have won 20 national championships. Azusa Pacific won the 2004-2005 as well as the 2005-2006 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) NAIA Director's Cup. Azusa Pacific's football team, which competes as an independent as the GSAC does not sponsor football, even beat the University of San Diego football team three consecutive years. USD football competes in Division I-AA of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the Pioneer Football League.
Hope International University and San Diego Christian College joined the GSAC in the fall of 1999. The newest member of the GSAC, The Master's College, joined in the fall of 2001.
