Golden Gate University is a private non-profit university founded in 1901 and headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is the fifth-largest private university in California.

The university evolved out of the literary reading groups of the San Francisco Central YMCA. The YMCA Evening College was formally established in 1896 and became an independent operation in 1901 with the creation of the parallel YMCA Evening School of Law. A contest in 1910 resulted in the adoption of the new name 'Golden Gate.' The institution was separately incorporated from the Central YMCA in 1923 as Golden Gate College. The College continued to share quarters with the YMCA, however, until 1966, when it moved to 536 Mission Street. In 1972, the College expanded and was elevated to university status.

The university also offers doctoral and post-doctoral programs in law, with specialised post-JD degrees in intellectual property, environmental law, taxation, United States Legal Studies, and international law.

Golden Gate University is institutionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Additionally, the School of Law is professionally accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California. The Law School is also a member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). In December 2005, however, the ABA placed the GGU School of Law on probation because of its low first-time bar pass rate. http://www.ggu.edu/school_of_law/about_ggu_law/accreditation 1]

[edit] Campus Life

The majority of the student body is made up of working adults who already hold undergraduate degrees as well as advanced degrees. Most are residents of California and Nevada who commute to class. There are no on-campus housing facilities. School mascot is the Golden Gate Griffin, a winged gargoyle. All sports programs compete at the intramural level or city league level. The most popular sport on the San Francisco campus is soccer (futbol) due to active participation of international students from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. A large minority segment of students from the east coast, practitioner-scholars from Ivy League, Big East, Big Ten universities in addition to local part-time faculty from UC Berkeley, UC Hastings and Stanford underlines Golden Gate University's strong commitment to "real world" applications of a quality graduate education. Some members of the campus community in San Francisco have compared GGU's east coast influences to the learning communities at Pace University in New York and Temple University in Philadelphia.

In particular, our San Francisco and San Jose office tax groups look to Golden Gate University each year for a significant number of winter interns and full-time hires. We are particularly impressed by how quickly the Golden Gate University graduates smoothly transition into our tax teams; something we don't believe happens by accident.
