Golden Gate Australian Football League
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Golden Gate Australian Football Leauge (GGAFL) is a division of the United States Australian Football League based in San Francisco. Contrary to the belief of some, they actually play 18-a-side games of football and only ever played metro football matches early on in their existence. The GGAFL was formed in 2002 to allow players in the old CAFL to compete, of whom many were sick of the travel. The Golden Gate Roos (nee Santa Cruz Roos) had as little as 14 players on their list when the GGAFL was established but once it was revealed that play would be restriced to the Bay Area, this quickly grew and now the league boasts over 80 players.
Whilst the GGAFL is equivalent to the EAFL or MAAFL, their individual clubs do not compete in the US Nationals, although this might not always be the case. Instead, a representative side, made up of the best players in the league and called the Golden Gate Roos competes on behalf of the four league clubs.
A key figure in the league is former VFL Fitzroy Football Club and Sydney Swans player John Ironmonger, now living in the United States.
