To mention Gottingen and without a brief discussion of its importance in the history of mathematics is a major ommision. Napolean ordered his troops to spare Gottingen in 1807 with the explanation "the greatest mathematician of all time is living there." Napolean was referring to Karl Fredrick Gauss, of course.
