[edit] Level 3 MPharm
The subject matter of level 3 is divided into 4 cognate units of study:
- medicinal chemistry,
- quality assurance of medicine production,
- disorders of the cardiovascular system, and
- disorders of the central nervous system.
This level of the MPharm course, however, is fully integrated as the exemplar medicines discussed within the biopharmaceutics component are selected from the drug classes covered in parallel therapeutics components.
[edit] Module list (4)
[edit] 1. Medicinal Chemistry and Biopharmaceutics (CH331/2)
Medicinal Chemistry and Biopharmaceutics describes the science underlying drug design and drug synthesis and addresses the issues to be considered when developing dosage forms for novel medicinal agents. The use of plants as sources of new medicines and consideration of quality aspects of herbal remedies is also covered.
[edit] 2. Microbiological and Quality Assurance Aspects of Medicine Production (CH333)
Microbiological and Quality Assurance Aspects of Medicine Production extends knowledge of microbiology to discuss the contamination of medicinal products, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), sterilisation, disinfection and preservation.
[edit] 3. Therapeutic Aspects of Cardiovascular Pharmacy and Oncology (PY334/5/6)
Therapeutic Aspects of Cardiovascular Pharmacy and Oncology discusses the physiology and pharmacology of the cardiovascular system including the blood and cancers of the blood. The evidence-based therapeutic uses of agents to treat disorders of these systems is described along with the relevant clinical considerations such as adverse drug effects and drug interactions.
Professional aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drugs acting on these systems, for example aseptic preparation and administation of cytotoxic agents, is covered within the dispensary-based coursework components.
[edit] 4. Neurological and Psychiatric Pharmacy (PY337)
Neurological and Psychiatric Pharmacy covers the physiology of the nervous system and the neuroanatomical and biochemical bases of disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, neuroses and psychoses. The mechanisms of action and therapeutic uses of drugs used to treat such conditions are described.
Professional aspects of the module cover issues such as the law, illict drug use, controlled drugs, communication with substance abusers and needle exchange systems/programs.
