Godiva is a poem written in 1842 by the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809 - 1892). It is based on the story of the Countess Godiva (c. 980 - 1067), an Anglo-Saxon lady who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry in England after her husband promised the he would remit oppressive taxes on his tenants if she agreed to do so.
