Chow returns to play Ko Chun, his character from God of Gamblers (1989), a skilled gambler who now lives in retirement in France. Wu Chien-lien plays Chow's romantic interest, Chingmy Yau plays a Taiwanese femme fatale, and Tony Leung provides much of the humor.

Trivia: The God of Gamblers enjoys expensive choclates, always wears a jade ring, and never has his photograph taken (There is only one picture of him from behind wearing a black leather jacket).
