God-Des and She

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

God-Des and She are a lesbian hip hop duo from the United States.

God-Des has a voice and style similar to Da Brat, yet draws attention because of her controversial lyrics, similar to the shock value of Eminem. Their music is characterised by complex rhymes, love songs about women, and soulful melodies provided by "She". They have crossed musical boundaries by attracting both hip-hop fans as well as those who normally do not listen to hip-hop, but love God-Des because of her political messages and outspoken personality. Together, their energy has been described as infectious and leaving people feeling good.

"She" (also known as Tina G) began singing before she could speak. Her natural instinct for music shines through her powerful, moving voice. Recalling the passion of artists such as Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin, she pours an energy and light on the crowd that has been described as leaving goose bumps on their arms and chills down their spines. Although "She" can sing many different styles of music, her main focus has been hip-hop and R&B since she joined God-Des in 1999.

God-Des has been a fan of hip-hop since the fourth grade. She has said that she used to imitate rap songs by Run DMC and the Beastie Boys in the back of the school bus. Raised by a musical family, God-Des began playing percussion in school band when she was ten. Her love of rhythm pushed her to try to utilise it in different ways other than drum sounds. She wanted to have a voice behind the beats. Emceeing came natural to her because she wrote poetry and understood rhythm.

God-Des is currently home-based in New York City and has been a regular on the club scene there since 2004. They appear in the 2005 documentary Pick Up the Mic. In 2006, they appeared on The L Word.
