Talk:Gobots
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gobots in Australia. I do not recall ever seeing GoBots packaging in Australia, even when the cartoon was on. I don't recall what the cartoon was called but I always knew it as Machine Men (maybe because of the distinctive "Mighty Machine Men, Mighty Vehicles, Mighty Machine Men, Mighty Robot" theme song).
During the 80s there were also small promotional Machine Men comic books which included a short strip and then a catalogue of toys and I think may have been free. I got one from my cousin. There was some controversy over these books but I can't recall if it was because of violence or shameless toy promotion?

[edit] Transformers rip-off?
Is Gobots a Transformers rip-off? It's often referred to that way... RobertM525 03:48, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
It's probably hard to be sure. I think GoBots came out a little later, but Gobots and Transformers all fell a few years after the transforming robot craze started in Japan. The Transformers Jetfire toy was a rip off of the VF-1S Valkyrie from the series Super Dimensional Fortress Macross down to the last detail (To be fair, that was probably due to a common manufacturer cheaping out. The Jetfire toy was identical to Valkyrie toys that you can still find in Japan to the point where it seems likely the same mold was used).
- It was the same mould, licensed from Bandai... And IIRC, Gobots made it out a couple of months ahead of Transformers, though the point that they were both taken from Japanese lines is a valid one - way I've heard it is that Tonka got wind of Hasbro's plans, and rushed Gobots through to hit the shelves first - though Transformers' more meticulous approach paid off as the releases and promotion were much more organised... Hell, Gobots was rushed out so much the first round of toys didn't even have faction names on them =)

[edit] Rewrite
Given this a bit of a going over, including splitting the majority of the Transformers stuff to Gobots (Transformer) to keep the article relatively short... I'll work on a better picture, with a range of figures by the Command Centre or something. Obviously, the whole thing's not quite there yet, and I've left the tags on there as I'm not sure if it's the sort of thing some idiot like me should be messing with =)
