Mundaring Weir etc

Got bored seeing goldfields water supply red links everywhere so have started a stub on it, have told ian and snot, thought I better let you know too :) oh, and plan to catchup as well will email today or tommorrow! SatuSuro 04:05, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

I do hope the gist of your goldfields stub was to pick on those two bits as well? :) SatuSuro 09:38, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I maybe taking it down a different path you might want to go - please feel free to edit as you wish and I can replace info elsewhere.

An example of what I was thinking, was my West Coast, Tasmania art. SatuSuro 10:55, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

The problem with that west tas art - is it probably dosnt even fit into correct wiki style guidelines, but because no one was coming in at all regarding content (until this morning when peta upturned my west coast range art :0) I more or less created the whole thing from the top of my head, I am not so confident with the goldfields :( SatuSuro 11:10, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
BTW quite relevant to this is that Peta put up the sub cats for Mining towns Category:Mining towns in Australia, and I havent found the afd debate yet, but it has very specific relevance to our current conversation SatuSuro 11:17, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks found it.SatuSuro 11:27, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Noticed your doing the sat night shift as well :) via the mundaring weir whatsmore :) I had meant to email to arrange a meetup next week. oops! SatuSuro 12:58, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Arrgghh!!!! The Darlington/railway station thing in Mgdg Weir art is very wrong!!!!!!

Check the 2006 UBD map 273 and 274 it starts in Kalamunda, follows south of the helena river, until the weir and than travels north of lake c/y oconnor!!!!!  :) SatuSuro 13:05, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

It may well have had a crossing in another place in one of its earlier incarnations - a good critique of the whole thing is that they changed the route! But current is Kalamunda south to the weir where it crosses, then around the north side of the weir, then eventually goes south. Nothing to do with Darlington. Never apoligise, the whole of wiki is basically flawed anyway  :) SatuSuro 13:11, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Ok it is possible to access the Helena Valley (ie the valley proper, not the locality) from a number of points from the north which then continue to the weir, I remember vividly doing a scout hike from Helena Valley primary school to the weir in a decade I shall not admit to  :) . Ian Elliot the historian of MDG also talks of famkily walks from Glen Forrest up the helena valley and back when asked... SatuSuro 13:27, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
And I think that would not have been the Bibulman track's early route either! SatuSuro 13:30, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Interesting thing memory - I havee had intriguing accounts from people about the railways in the hills (Mundaring Weir Branch Railway, Eastern Railway, Western Australia, and I go by my memory on some of it - but I alway revert to textual sources, as there are some very skewed bits that come from some :) SatuSuro 13:57, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

B. brownii

New map looks good, thanks. This is so close to done now; I just can't polish it any more. I just need to kill off these last few to-do points and we can consider it done. What do you want to do next? I think you had started a push to get B. menziesii up before you decided to help me with B. brownii. Feel like having a crack at menziesii now, or are you over Banksia for a while? Snottygobble 12:49, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Check it out: [1]. The CALM distribution map was updated on April 13 to reflect a new collection of B. brownii around Hopetoun! This calls for a rewrite! Can you update your map please? Snottygobble 03:00, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Map

About the new legend on the Banksia distribution map, "salicinae" doesn't work for two reasons: B. dentata is itself a member of series Salicinae; and a number of eastern species are members of other series, such as Banksia and Spicigerae. I tried to think up a good way of capturing the point that B. dentata is a big extension of the eastern distribution, rather than a separate distribution. But then I realised that the legend text is a bit too small to read when embedded in the article anyway. Could you enlarge the legend text a bit and simplify it to

  • South Western species
  • Eastern species
  • B. dentata

(with coloured dots of course)? (I think lower case "species" to be consistent with the article but I'll leave that up to you)

I'll write into the article text and/or caption something that clarifies the status of the tropical distribution as an extension of the eastern rather than a third distinct distribution.

Snottygobble 00:10, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Kangaroo paws

You want to take a better one? I reckon your current photo of Mangles Kangaroo Paw is outstanding. Anigozanthos really isn't grabbing my interest at the moment; it's Peta's baby, I was just responding to a query. Maybe ask her. Snottygobble 06:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Hi, thanks for the pic offer, a full habitat pic of the species might be good, and a close up of flowers that is a bit more focussed. Pictures of anything that is flowering would be great, or saltmarsh, I'm planning to work on a bunch of Australian flora articles.--Peta 09:34, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

AARS

Great acronym yes? Bennetts papers are at Battye - and I have some stuff from the 1940's and 1950's about him in the family stash which I'll get out of the storate unit in a month or two..I think he deserves an entry. SatuSuro 12:35, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Vet Surgeon History in WA is an interesting one - Bennetts and the Ag Dept vets, and some of the private practice ones - in the 1950's were all fairly good mates - Perth was v small (have you heard this one from me yet?) so I could tell you the life stories off the top of my head about a big gang of vets from then.. I shall have to trawl wiki and elsewhere to see what other states do - I will have to hand later in the year quite a bit about it all - will send an email on one aspect of this ; SatuSuro 13:07, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Back

Teenager discipline issue might have seen computers sent off to in-laws for many weeks.  :( Has been sort of resolved  :0 But I wonder :- SatuSuro 00:47, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks!

I just wanted to stop by and thank you for supporting the FA Premier League FAC now that your objections are resolved. I sincerely appreciate your willingness to work through these issues with me as it has helped to create a better (and hopefully featured) article. - Pal 19:56, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Australian Magpie...a collaboration effort?

This one could be spruced up pretty well. There are some SA pix. You could take a photo of WA subspecies and I can try and snap an NSW one........:)Cas Liber 02:09, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that. Should suit well, unless you see something really snazzy. Cheers Cas Liber 09:02, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Smelly

There are two arts I'd like you to check out - factoid and statoid - I suspect they really should be in Afd, but am passing it by you and a few others I know, just in case my very rare intake of beer this evening helped me get it wrong!  :) SatuSuro 14:36, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for checking and responding - I think both are dubious, so I have left [citation needed] in them to aleviate the anxiety of thinking Im looking at hoax articles SatuSuro 04:46, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
In actual factoid fact (sic) I didnt, and have taken them off my watchlist as silly b-----s are going in and legitimising the rubbish.. Thanks for the other stuff ;) SatuSuro 09:05, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Problem is with Mount Isa its the same issue that Snotty and I took up with Kal and the List of cities by land area etc etc etc oid this oid that :( SatuSuro 09:54, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Kings Park photos

The prionotes-like thingy is Banksia hookeriana, colloquially known as a 'hookie', the only winter flowering acorn banksia - and it also has the finer leaves than prionotes.

The first two piccies of a prostrate banksia are Banksia gardneri gardneri (B. g. hiemalis flowers earlier and has pale green leaves.

The last bud-thing looks alot like a B. blechnifolia bud. Was this a different plant to the preceding two? Cas Liber

Thank goodness for Cas; I thought the first was B. prionotes, and had managed to narrow the others down to the Banksia ser. Prostratae. ;-) Snottygobble 11:27, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
On the littoralis loks like some form of scale insect, but I am not too good on pests yet. Cas Liber 20:50, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

The pictures look great, I will keep watching for more to come. --Peta 00:56, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Dude, you should try to get some of the snazzier ones on Featured Piccies...Cas Liber 08:06, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I croped, sharpened and tilted the candidate. See waht happens Cas Liber 11:32, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Aah well, wait till summer, laods of B grandis and attenuata 'round Perth which will look great - all yellow with a polarising filter. magic.............Cas Liber 11:34, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

completeness

For utter completeness (I think my camera was't working too well at the time), there's a cast of Banksia archaeocarpa in the WA museum (hall of life ??), which is from the Kennedy Ranges Paleocene strata. One of the earliest fossil cones and bearing a resemblance to Banksia attenuata.

I have been meaning to start a bit on fossil record of Banksias but haven't got round to it yet.Cas Liber 11:45, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Some Kennedy Range fossils have been vandalised -g ood to hear one is in captivity :) SatuSuro 09:23, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

78s

I agree with "the store is said to have had a large influence upon the music scene within Perth." When I was a young'un, the only decent (and therefore influential) record stores were 78s, Dadas and Mills. Personally I preferred Dadas but I do think 78s was influential almost to the point of being iconic in its time. I wouldn't know about its current status. There's probably not much more to say about it than what has already been said. Snottygobble 05:42, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

And it's certainly not a "landmark". Snottygobble 05:45, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
I guess not. I've always been of the opinion that virtually anything verifiable is notable enough to warrant inclusion. I think it would be very hard to verify anything much about 78s, so even by my lax standards it should go. It wouldn't be a speedy though; you'd have to take it to AfD. Snottygobble 05:53, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
fiwereyou I'd ask SatuSuro; he has expressed an interest in the history of the Perth music scene at times. Snottygobble 06:03, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Needs to be absorbed - it looks like an ad - it does not constitute an article alone; however, I dont have the info on the others to make it a 3rd or 1/4 of a larger art. Very tricky, wouldnt afd it, but maybe 'List of music outlets in perth...' SatuSuro 08:52, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

I am still patchy on WA plants - there is a Dryandra book out soon. I don't know the species of Dryandra, the second is a Hakea but I'd be guessing at which one, cristata maybe (?). cheers Cas Liber 02:10, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Banksia epica

I created Banksia epica and rated it B-Class. Can I get a second opinion on that? Downgrade it to Start-Class if you don't think its good enough / meets the B-Class criteria. Snottygobble 12:06, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Delayed Again

I gotta do Freo today - which means will have to put it off again! SatuSuro 01:31, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for sorting out Stirlo

Thanks for revising the BoP lines added to the J Stirlo entry - "One sided bloodbath" seemed objective enough - hard to argue otherwise - but the revised entry is more diplomatic, informative and most importantly keeps the link to the BoP entry - In future I'll stick to the hagiographic style.

Kal

Theyre at it again SatuSuro 05:38, 1 September 2006 (UTC) Thanks, I'll do it next time SatuSuro 06:20, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Commons

Yep, i was busy over there today. I'm not really happy with the way I've organised it. There's too much duplication between the articles and the categories (e.g. Commons:Banksia laricina versus Commons:Category:Banksia laricina). But it was such a dog's breakfast over there that any structure at all was better than nothing.

I've got an idea to fix it, but I'll let it brew for a while before charging in. I was thinking I'd edit all the species article info e.g.

Familia
Proteaceae
Genus
Banksia

into the species category itself, thus making the articles redundant. Then turn each article into a redirect to the corresponding category. That would kill off the duplication, and save the effort of adding each newly uploaded image to a gallery. Snottygobble 13:14, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

DYK

Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated. On 1 September 2006, a fact from the article Banksia epica, which you recently nominated, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. Talk:Steve Irwin

I tried giving the talk page some archiving before, but edit conflicts got in the way. It's a page of high activity at the moment. If it slows down a little I (or somebody else, no special privledges are need to archive) will give it another shot. -- Longhair 10:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Seems quieter now, but I see you've begun anyway. If you need any help let me know. I'm here on and off for a bit yet. -- Longhair 10:48, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean by frame the page sorry? Do you mean like my talk page? Or something else? Introducing fancy style is kinda frowned upon on article talk pages if that's what you're referring to. Otherwise, I'm happy to be corrected if I've misunderstood. -- Longhair 10:55, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
You're not referring to the pretty new archive box are you? I've never used it to be honest, but it wouldn't be difficult to find out how. -- Longhair 11:13, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Done. You're not an administrator? Always assumed you were... -- Longhair 11:43, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Seems the archiving is broken at Talk:Steve Irwin. There's a red link showing my recent deletion. Can you re-insert your recent edit thanks? -- Longhair 11:51, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Take more care...

...in future when archiving talk page comments. You inadcertently removed one of my recent questions before anyone had a chance to answer it. --Badharlick 11:52, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Use of GFDL on Uluru images

Hi on the Uluru talk page you mention that you would check out the legalities of releasing images under GFDL type licenses, has there been any progression Gnangarra 13:07, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

I haven't forgotten about this, although I haven't had time to do much on this front, unfortunately. By next week I hope to have made contact with one of the copyright experts at my law school, I should be able to get some answers there. --bainer (talk) 14:48, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

No more archiving on the Steve Irwin talk page please

We're having real problems with people just randomly removing and archiving comments in this article at the moment. In case you're one of them and you're trying to keep the flood of new messages down, please just don't. If the page gets huge again like it did, then feel free to archive some of the old stuff, but otherwise let it run it's course. I'm not accusing you of doing this, it's just that I vaguely remember you saying you'd be archiving it hourly. Since the flood of new comments has died down now, I think this is unneccessary. If you're nothing to do with any of this, then please disregard and delete this message. --Badharlick 16:50, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

anon tampering with my user page

Thanks for your input. If this anon user removes the image again, I won't mind if you revert. I've put a note in my last edit saying that I won't accept major changes by anon users, and that s/he should sign in first. Fair enough? Tony 04:25, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks again. Now, if s/he does it again, s/he will have breached the 3R rule; how does one go about banning? I guess the image has to go, but I'm damned if I'm going to have my page mucked about by someone who won't log in properly. Apart from the presumptuousness, there's no accountability, and no way to communicate. Tony 08:20, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeah it probably should but how does an anon with no others edits know wp policy so well and is capable of using wikistyling for links etc. Gnangarra 09:53, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Block on Jazzper

Yes, I've been examining him and I'm aware of his history. That's part of the reason I want th original blocking admin to look at the case and decide if Jazzper is truly repentent. If he's not available, I'd be inclined to unblock him because the only type of indefinite block that is allowed is a "community ban", ie, a ban on a user that no other admins have bothered to unblock. Only ArbCom can truly apply a sanction that can't be undone by the average Joe Admin: and they can only hand out blocks of up to a year. Given the serious nature of Jazzper's actions, I'd rather the original blocking admin provide his input before I do anything. --Deathphoenix ʕ 11:58, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

No problem, thanks for the info. I'm willing to wait until he comes back. --Deathphoenix ʕ 13:22, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Obscure Flora

Got my hand on Threatened flora (Brown, Thomson-Dans and Marchant) today - intrigued by some of the claimed extinct and nearly gone ones (as at 1999 in CALM's eyes) - in it it claims we have the eightth highest number of ednemic species when compared with regions throughout the world - I have a very vague recollection that some where in wikipedia someone has tried to rank us (ie south west) higher than that, do you have any idea whether I am remembering right? SatuSuro 15:19, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Thought it would be worth doing an article reviewing the issues - possibly linking to a number of other arts? I agree the need to avoid Kal like lists and claims and counter claims. SatuSuro 02:40, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
The regional thing is a nightmare on wheels - every dog and their minder has a different region - as well as the institutionally sanctioned biological, weather, admin boundaries of what constitutes the south west. My thought was if there was an overview art, it doesnt have to make any claims in rankings in relation to diversity, complexity - but simply make a gernal intro. Problem is the whole thing feels like the goldfields water supply article Ian and I started - it could take ages, and the potential field of info is large. Oh well. SatuSuro 08:49, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
As for bush and outback - a good encyclopedia would actually treat these issues well - there's over a hundred years of cultural commentary and usage of bush and less for the other - but I walked away from those two arts long ago - sigh. SatuSuro 02:53, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Ghosts

Greetings! List of Ghost towns look like a separate animal from Ghost towns of Australia category - I dont have the time now, but the two - need checking against each other. I think the list needs "state" ifying (probably subheadings), and the ghost towns category list needs some moves to the list. As for Langs legacy, I havent been there recently but have been to funerals of ex residents - suspect it can fit there. My favourite of em all is Crotty - the gazetted town is under the water of Lake Burbury! SatuSuro 06:43, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
