[edit] Administrative division

The commune's capital Gierzwałd, the larger of the two, dates back to the 14th century. The commune is not named after the commune capital, which is unusual in Poland; instead it is called gmina Grunwald because of historical importance of the Battle of Grunwald that took place in the area in 1410.
